Who were the Friends of Hower House?

This organization was established in 1974 to preserve the house and its furnishings and to provide a glimpse into 19th century life.

The Friends of Hower House were there to:

  1. Support the restoration and maintenance of this fine cultural attraction.
  2. Help preserve a window into Akron’s past.
  3. Participate in the activities and events of Hower House.
  4. Support the staff, promotion, and operation of the Hower House Museum.

Who were the Victorians of Hower House?

The Victorians as a volunteer group was established in 1979 to support the Friends of Hower House and to assist in the operation of Hower House Museum. “The Victorians, as a volunteer support group of the Friends of Hower House, shall assist in the preservation of Hower House, its contents and grounds, and shall help to provide educational awareness of its historical significance.”

These donors and volunteers, after many years of working in two separate groups (the Friends of Hower House and the Victorians), decided to merge in 2016. After nine months of joint meetings and discussions, the Hower House Museum Guild was formed. They still hold true to the promotion of Hower House Museum, helping to preserve a window into Akron’s past!

Like many historic houses and landmarks throughout the United States, Hower House Museum relies on the dedication and hard work of its volunteers. Director Linda Bussey refers to the volunteers as “the lifeblood of the museum”. All donations, memberships, patronage, and volunteerism are deeply appreciated to help preserve and promote the history of the Hower family, their exquisite and diverse Collection, and the impact the Hower family had on the history of Akron, Ohio.
